Ecommerce: how to reduce cart abandonment

The most common reasons customers abandon checkout, and how to fix them.

Cart abandonment is one of the most common problems in online stores, and it almost always comes down to the same causes: unexpected costs at the end of checkout, a checkout process that's too long, or a lack of payment options the customer recognizes and trusts.

Showing shipping costs upfront (not as a surprise at the last step) reduces abandonment immediately. Customers prefer knowing the real total before committing to the purchase process.

Simplifying checkout to the bare minimum steps, and allowing guest checkout without forcing an account, removes one of the main sources of friction that makes people abandon right before paying.

Finally, including local payment options alongside international ones builds extra trust — many customers in the Dominican Republic prefer paying by bank transfer or a local card over a payment gateway they don't recognize.
